Beyoncé approves of cowboycore
  + stars: | 2024-02-16 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Completing her look were a pair of aviator-style shades, an embellished head scarf and a stone-colored cowboy hat. In fact, Beyoncé hasn’t been without a cowboy hat in nearly two weeks. On TikTok #cowboycore has 11.4 million views and counting, where users video themselves styling a wide-brimmed rancher cap or, as in one video, pairing vintage leather chaps with a belted trench coat. Cowboy boots, for one, were plucked from their country context and thrust onto the urban streets of metropolitan cities years ago. The embroidered leather boots have been a mainstay of the style set ever since, transcending over the years from a subversive statement piece to something more timeless.

But at its core, “Pedro Páramo” is a tale of two journeys, or perhaps one journey that unfolds into two. The narrator, Juan Preciado, goes to his parents’ hometown after his mother dies, seeking his long-estranged father, Pedro Páramo. If where and when we are in “Pedro Páramo” is constantly shifting, then sound is the swift and sinuous vehicle that carries us through it. (It was a fun experiment, and we shared the results with the sound designers of a forthcoming “Pedro Páramo” film. They wrote back to say they were inspired by our sound lists and wanted to credit the students.)

How Do You Spell Discrimination?
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Cynthia Greenlee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In 1936, the eighth grader MacNolia Cox became the first Black student to win the Akron, Ohio, citywide spelling bee. Spelling bees fit neatly into the idea of American meritocracy and are, increasingly, a vehicle for immigrant industry. Weatherford’s depiction of Cox’s journey pairs facts gleaned from newspaper accounts with directive questions: “Can you spell discrimination?”It is not subtle. But at a time when many Americans will offer any explanation for racism but racism, there is value in being on-the-nose. Even in seemingly straightforward games of achievement like spelling bees, the best and the brightest don’t always secure the victory, and racism can curdle the whole affair.

Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. Jan 19 (Reuters) - Following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, world's largest oilfield firm SLB (SLB.N) has boosted its business in Russia by cherry-picking service and equipment contracts from rivals who left, according to company documents and people familiar with its operations. For example, SLB's Russia and Central Asia reservoir performance division in the third quarter of 2022 grew revenue by 25% over the prior quarter. The company said in March that, while it is continuing operations in Russia, it has halted new investments there. One reason SLB is finding new success in Russia is that rivals have exited the region. "The message from HQ is to take mostly exclusive contracts with high revenue," said a SLB employee involved in the business wins.
More than 18 million people from Texas to Mississippi are under threat of severe storms Tuesday, including tornadoes. In Mississippi, the Meridian Public School District – which serves over 4,900 students – announced they will be closed Wednesday due to the threat of severe weather. The Lawrence County and McComb School Districts also announced they were closing Wednesday due to the threat of severe weather. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency also noted the severe weather expected in the state and asked residents to prepare. “With severe weather expected throughout Mississippi tonight and tomorrow, please review your severe weather preparedness checklist to make sure you are ready for the storms,” the agency said in a message on Twitter.
POLITICAL TALKSFollowing oil sanctions on Venezuela in 2019, Chevron received an exemption to trade its Venezuelan crude to recoup pending debts. Chevron's four PDVSA joint ventures produced about 200,000 barrels per day of crude oil and exported the crude around the world prior to the sanctions. It also allows the U.S. company to import supplies to help process the country's crude oil into exportable grades. That limits any wider expansion of Venezuelan oil production. Chevron and other U.S. oil refiners could benefit from supplies of Venezuela's heavy crude flowing to their U.S. Gulf Coast processing plants.

A 12-year-old Texas girl accused of shooting her father in a murder pact she made with a friend died by suicide, authorities said Wednesday. He is expected to recover, the sheriff’s office said. The second girl did not act and was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities found the Weatherford girl around 11:30 p.m. lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Investigators believe the girl shot her father and fled before she turned the gun on herself, the sheriff's office has said.
A twelve-year-old girl in Weatherford, Texas allegedly shot both herself and her father on Tuesday night in an alleged murder pact she made with another girl to kill their families and pets, the Parker County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. Investigators believe the girl allegedly shot her father, fled the scene and then shot herself, according to the sheriff's office. A representative for the sheriff's office did not immediately respond to an inquiry from NBC News about their current conditions or whether the 12-year-old had been charged. Police said the shootings were allegedly part of a murder plot the girl made weeks earlier with another girl in Lufkin, Texas, a city about 230 miles southeast of Weatherford. The girls allegedly planned to murder their families and pets and then run away together to Georgia, according to the sheriff's office.
While the S & P 500 is down almost 19% for the year, the energy sector has thrived by comparison, having posted a roughly 40% gain in 2022. The firm said it expects Chesapeake to generate 15% free cash flow yield in 2023 and 10% the following year. Further, Weatherford has introduced initiatives to close its margin gap with peers and improve its free cash flow conversion, Goldman says. For oil and global exploration and production, Goldman looked at stocks trading at a discount to their net asset value. That includes Magnolia Oil & Gas , which the firm says is well positioned to generate double-digit free cash flow yield and dividend growth.
